How Torque Converters Work

A torque converter connects the engine to the automatic transmission. It uses transmission fluid instead of a direct mechanical link.

When the engine runs, the impeller pushes transmission fluid toward the turbine. The moving fluid creates hydraulic pressure. This pressure turns the turbine and transfers engine torque to the transmission input shaft.

Key Components of a Torque Converter
