The steering shaft sits inside the column housing, directly below the steering wheel. The intermediate shaft connects the column to the rack or box further down the chain.

2. Can I replace just the lock cylinder instead of the full steering column?

Often, yes. Many lock faults are isolated to the lock cylinder itself rather than the full column assembly, though confirming this before ordering avoids buying the wrong part.

3. What does a worn steering column bearing feel like?

A grinding or rough sensation when turning the wheel, often present even at low speed or while stationary, is the clearest sign of steering column bearing wear.

4. Why did my electric steering column suddenly lose all power assistance?

Electric assist systems built into the column tend to fail rather than gradually decline. A sudden, complete loss of assistance typically points to an electrical or motor fault requiring inspection.
